Friedrich Schiller, the great German classical poet and friend of the American Revolution, assigned to art the task of ennobling the spirit of Man, especially at those times when political circumstances are most unfavorable, men most degraded, and when the qualities of genius are most urgently required to find a way to avert political catastrophe. Reading Schiller’s poetry, as well as his historical, philosophical, and aesthetic works, has precisely the effect on the sensitive reader of which Schiller informed us--to produce in the reader an ennobling power which then continues to exist long after the reading is done. This is volume II of the four volume collection of translations. Volume II includes Schiller Institute English translations of the following: Wilhelm Tell The Parasite What Is, and to What End Do We Study, Universal History The Legislation of Lycurgus and Solon On Grace and Dignity Kalias, or, On the Beautiful The Mission of Moses

The Ten Commandments belong to the "classics" of Western culture. They are an authoritative part of the Hebrew and the Christian Scriptures. Since they come to us from an ancient past, it is both necessary and worthwhile to inquire what they may mean for us today. Thorwald Lorenzen contends it is important to hear God's invitation to an alternative lifestyle: "you shall not kill," "you shall not commit adultery," "you shall not covet." His thoughtful reflections on the commandments for today's tumultuous world begin with the God who "speaks" ten word to liberate God's people from oppression. Grounded in God's liberating "yes," the "ten words" are neither laws nor rules. They are elements for a culture of freedom in which people are invited to celebrate life.

What is freedom...what does it look do I achieve it...and how do I keep it...honest questions that deserve an answer. I am not a pastor...I don't have a college degree...I don't own a fancy house or a luxury car...but I can tell you this - I found freedom in Jesus and it tastes absolutely incredible! If you are in a desert and you find water, only the incorrigible would fail to share that discovery with others.. Even the lepers in II Kings 7 realized they had a responsibility to share their life saving discovery with the other Israelites in the camp. I have discovered what true freedom is and I am compelled to share it with anyone who will listen! It is my prayer that you will join me on this incredible journey of freedom. Welcome to the adventure of a lifetime!

The postrevolutionary reconstruction of the Mexican government did not easily or immediately reach all corners of the country. At every level, political intermediaries negotiated, resisted, appropriated, or ignored the dictates of the central government. National policy reverberated through Mexico s local and political networks in countless different ways and resulted in a myriad of regional arrangements. It is this process of diffusion, politicking, and conflict that Benjamin T. Smith examines in Pistoleros and Popular Movements. Oaxaca s urban social movements and the tension between federal, state, and local governments illuminate the multivalent contradictions, fragmentations, and crises of the state-building effort at the regional level. A better understanding of these local transformations yields a more realistic overall view of the national project of state building. Smith places Oaxaca within this larger framework of postrevolutionary Mexico by comparing the region to other states and linking local politics to state and national developments. Drawing on an impressive range of regional case studies, this volume is a comprehensive and engaging study of postrevolutionary Oaxaca s role in the formation of modern Mexico.
