Anthony Swofford's Jarhead is the first Gulf War memoir by a frontline infantry marine, and it is a searing, unforgettable narrative. When the marines -- or "jarheads," as they call themselves -- were sent in 1990 to Saudi Arabia to fight the Iraqis, Swofford was there, with a hundred-pound pack on his shoulders and a sniper's rifle in his hands. It was one misery upon another. He lived in sand for six months, his girlfriend back home betrayed him for a scrawny hotel clerk, he was punished by boredom and fear, he considered suicide, he pulled a gun on one of his fellow marines, and he was shot at by both Iraqis and Americans. At the end of the war, Swofford hiked for miles through a landscape of incinerated Iraqi soldiers and later was nearly killed in a booby-trapped Iraqi bunker. Swofford weaves this experience of war with vivid accounts of boot camp (which included physical abuse by his drill instructor), reflections on the mythos of the marines, and remembrances of battles with lovers and family. As engagement with the Iraqis draws closer, he is forced to consider what it is to be an American, a soldier, a son of a soldier, and a man. Unlike the real-time print and television coverage of the Gulf War, which was highly scripted by the Pentagon, Swofford's account subverts the conventional wisdom that U.S. military interventions are now merely surgical insertions of superior forces that result in few American casualties. Jarhead insists we remember the Americans who are in fact wounded or killed, the fields of smoking enemy corpses left behind, and the continuing difficulty that American soldiers have reentering civilian life. A harrowing yet inspiring portrait of a tormented consciousness struggling for inner peace, Jarhead will elbow for room on that short shelf of American war classics that includes Philip Caputo's A Rumor of War and Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, and be admired not only for the raw beauty of its prose but also for the depth of its pained heart.

Welcome To The Suck Plot Outline Based on former Marine Anthony Swofford's best-selling 2003 book about his pre-Desert Storm experiences in Saudi Arabia and about his experiences fighting in Kuwait. Plot Synopsis: Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom ... Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up Swofford's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit.

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1, University of Regensburg, course: Proseminar, 1 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: These are the two types into which women can be classificated in the eyes of a Marine. This attitude towards women might be disguisting in the eyes of the reader of Anthony Swofford ́s war novel Jarhead: a Marine ́s chronicle of the Gulf War and other battles (2003) but it seems as if it is normal in the United States Marine Corps, (US MC), to which the author belonged during the first Gulf War. Having grown up in Tachikawa, Japan and having served a ordinary High-School education it is interesting to find out, where this attitude came from and if it already existed in the mind of the author.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Social Studies (General), grade: N/A, The University of Surrey, course: BSc (Hons) Criminology and Sociology, language: English, abstract: This thesis involves an examination of the use of Ideology in Film, specifically the war film "Jarhead". In addressing this subject I use the works of three prominent sociologists, Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels and Antonio Gramsci, as reference points for the study. The starting point is establishment of a definition of ideology which, overall, satisfies the views of these writers. Having followed Marx’s and Engels’ sketch of the historical evolution of the concept of ideology, I consider sociological perspectives on film, violence and war, giving reference to the film Jarhead. An analysis is then made with regards to four ideological themes identified in the film, considering the effectiveness of the messages being conveyed. This dissertation uses the qualitative research method, being based on previously available information.

In this book, we have hand-picked the most sophisticated, unanticipated, absorbing (if not at times crackpot!), original and musing book reviews of "Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles." Don't say we didn't warn you: these reviews are known to shock with their unconventionality or intimacy. Some may be startled by their biting sincerity; others may be spellbound by their unbridled flights of fantasy. Don't buy this book if: 1. You don't have nerves of steel. 2. You expect to get pregnant in the next five minutes. 3. You've heard it all.
