Micro And Nanoscale Fluid Mechanics

Author : Brian J. Kirby

Publisher: Cambridge University Press
Release Date : 2010-07-26

Download Micro And Nanoscale Fluid Mechanics written by Brian J. Kirby and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-26 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This text focuses on the physics of fluid transport in micro- and nanofabricated liquid-phase systems, with consideration of gas bubbles, solid particles, and macromolecules. This text was designed with the goal of bringing together several areas that are often taught separately - namely, fluid mechanics, electrodynamics, and interfacial chemistry and electrochemistry - with a focused goal of preparing the modern microfluidics researcher to analyse and model continuum fluid mechanical systems encountered when working with micro- and nanofabricated devices. This text serves as a useful reference for practising researchers but is designed primarily for classroom instruction. Worked sample problems are included throughout to assist the student, and exercises at the end of each chapter help facilitate class learning.

The Micro Macro Link

Author : Jeffrey C. Alexander

Publisher: Univ of California Press
Release Date : 1987

Download The Micro Macro Link written by Jeffrey C. Alexander and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Social Science categories.

The work of fifteen nationally and internationally known theorists in sociology, this volume demonstrates an exciting new trend in sociological thinking. Each essay proposes a link between the two distinguishable traditions of sociological theory--the microscopic, which stresses the self and the interaction among persons, and the macroscopic, which concentrates on the institutional, cultural, and societal levels. Each mode of analysis has had its champions, and the proponents of each have often taken positions of polemic opposition to one another.

Violence

Author : Randall Collins

Publisher: Princeton University Press
Release Date : 2009-08-03

Download Violence written by Randall Collins and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-03 with Social Science categories.

In the popular misconception fostered by blockbuster action movies and best-selling thrillers--not to mention conventional explanations by social scientists--violence is easy under certain conditions, like poverty, racial or ideological hatreds, or family pathologies. Randall Collins challenges this view in Violence, arguing that violent confrontation goes against human physiological hardwiring. It is the exception, not the rule--regardless of the underlying conditions or motivations. Collins gives a comprehensive explanation of violence and its dynamics, drawing upon video footage, cutting-edge forensics, and ethnography to examine violent situations up close as they actually happen--and his conclusions will surprise you. Violence comes neither easily nor automatically. Antagonists are by nature tense and fearful, and their confrontational anxieties put up a powerful emotional barrier against violence. Collins guides readers into the very real and disturbing worlds of human discord--from domestic abuse and schoolyard bullying to muggings, violent sports, and armed conflicts. He reveals how the fog of war pervades all violent encounters, limiting people mostly to bluster and bluff, and making violence, when it does occur, largely incompetent, often injuring someone other than its intended target. Collins shows how violence can be triggered only when pathways around this emotional barrier are presented. He explains why violence typically comes in the form of atrocities against the weak, ritualized exhibitions before audiences, or clandestine acts of terrorism and murder--and why a small number of individuals are competent at violence. Violence overturns standard views about the root causes of violence and offers solutions for confronting it in the future.

Patricia S. Mann explains our current period as a time of social transformation resulting from an 'unmooring' of women, men, and children from the nuclear family, gender relations having replaced economic relations as the primary site of social tension and change in our lives.

Micro And Nanostructured Multiphase Polymer Blend Systems

Author : Charef Harrats
language : en
Publisher: CRC Press
Release Date : 2005-09-29

Download Micro And Nanostructured Multiphase Polymer Blend Systems written by Charef Harrats and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Micro- and Nanostructured Multiphase Polymer Blend Systems: Phase Morphology and Interfaces focuses on the formation of phase morphology in polymer blends and copolymers and considers various types of blends including thermosets, thermoplastics, thermoplastic vulcanizates, and structured copolymers. The book carefully debates the processing, rheology, and crystallization aspects of the phase morphology of polymer blends. The text surveys theory, characterization, processing, and experimental aspects of phase morphology development and design of polymer blends. It examines the adhesion of polymer–polymer interfaces in immiscible polymer blends and the different ways by which nanostructures may be generated in thermosetting polymers. The book analyzes the polymerization process and the dynamic vulcanization of multicomponent polymer blends and the crystallization behavior occurring in blends with a confined morphology. It also discusses the structure–rheology relationship in compatibilized blends, the effects of elasticity on the structure development, and the rheological response in concentrated blends. Micro- and Nanostructured Multiphase Polymer Blend Systems examines the current state of the art, challenges, and future prospects in the field of polymer blends. The handpicked selection of topics and expert contributors makes this survey of phase morphology in polymer blends an outstanding resource for anyone involved in the field of polymer materials design.
